FFHS VARSITY CHEERLEADERS
Class D
STATE CHAMPIONS!

Fort Fairfield Journal, February 28, 2007, p. 1
After a setback on Saturday, where a water main break caused their competition to be postponed, the Fort Fairfield High School Varsity Cheering squad returned to Bangor on Monday, February 12 where they subsequently won the Class D State Championship Title.
This is Fort Fairfield’s third State Championship under coach Kelly Bubar.
“I’ve been coaching the cheerleaders since 1990,” said coach Bubar. “I took 1995 and 2004 off, but coached everything in between.”
This year’s FFHS Varsity cheering squad features 20 cheerleaders: 18 female and 2 male. “The maximum allowed by the Maine Principal’s association is twenty; this is a large group for class D. At the competition there were an average of twelve on the floor for other schools, while we had sixteen.”
Even though there are four alternates, all cheerleaders train for the routines. “Everyone knows the routines. I rotate the kids through evenly so they all get a chance to perform.”
Bubar describes the judging as consistent from one year to the next. “The judges do a really good job. They are generally ex
-cheerleaders or retired cheering coaches; they come from all over the state.” 1988 was the first year cheerleaders began competing at this level in Maine. This State Championship is the second in a row for Fort Fairfield. “I have a lot of seniors this year, so we’ll be loosing some veterans but the freshmen, sophomores and juniors we have are all doing really well and I expect Fort to have a great squad next year, too.”
Years ago, the cheering squad was divided between girls and boys varsity basketball games; for the past 14 years, they have been combined into one unit cheering for both teams at all home games.
Sadly, this is Bubar’s last year as coach. “I’m going to coach through the New England Championships in Durham, New Hampshire on March 17, then it’ll be time to let someone else have a chance.”
